Niehaus receives award for giving back to the community

A local businessman has received the Indiana Philanthropy Award.

Vincennes University Alum Bernie Niehaus received the honor from Indiana Chapter of The Association of Fundraising Professionals.

He was nominated by the VU Foundation and Alumni Association.

The university says Niehaus is an alumnus whose roots in Vincennes University run deep and has consistently been dedicated to enhancing the lives of others through his philanthropic endeavors.

The chairman and retired CEO of Niehaus Lumber says he believes in living a life of service finding that the more you give the more you receive.

The company has been celebrating 90 years in business this year.

Niehaus served as President of the Alumni Association in the early 1960’s and dhelped in the founding of the university’s Construction Technology Program.

He was a member of the VU Board of Trustees for 24 years serving four years as chair in the 1990’s.

He was given an honorary doctorate by the university in 2007 and currently serves on the VU Foundation Board of Directors.
