A traffic stop turned into a police chase Monday night.

An Indiana State Police trooper stopped a vehicle for going 49 miles an hour in a 25mph zone on Main Street in Patoka.

After making the stop, the trooper smelled cannabis and saw a smoking device.

As the officer was getting assistance from another trooper and preparing a field sobriety test, the driver sped away and led police through the streets of Patoka and then into a field and that’s when the driver got stuck in the mud and then fled on foot.

The trooper gave chase and tackled the runner to the ground who fought the trooper as well as another officer who had arrived.

He was eventually subdued but both troopers did suffer minor injuries.

Arrested was 46-year-old Zeberiah Stillwell of Princeton.  He was taken the hospital in Princeton for clearance and then to the Gibson County Jail.

He faces charges of resisting, driving while intoxicated, drug possession and illegal weapons possession.
