Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb on Wednesday signed an executive order calling for a state of emergency due to the coming eclipse.

The Great American Solar Eclipse will pass directly over Indiana on April 8th.

In his order, the governor stated that the massive number of people expected to be in the state to witness the event may stress or interfere with first responder and public safety communications and emergency response systems.

The statewide disaster emergency is in effect now through midnight on April 9th.

The declaration allows Indiana to utilize resources from other states who are also members of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact.

Member states share equipment and communications when needed and given the amount of tourists that will likely be in Indiana, the governor said the action will ensure that Indiana is “totally prepared” for the once in a lifetime phenomenon,
