CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate.

That’s a person who advocates for kids involving in Children in Need of Services or CHINS cases in the Knox County court system.

The mission is to look out for the best interests of neglected, abused, and exploited children.

CASA Director Denise Swink says they currently have just over 20 volunteers who are going through training.

Volunteers must be adult US citizens willing to undergo a background check and be committed to see cases through to the end.

Swink says the training provides the tools necessary to be a strong, informed and independent voice for the children in the court process.

Monday is April 1st and the start of Child Abuse Awareness month.

Swink encourages people to report abuse when they see it.

CASA will be putting out more information about child abuse awareness throughout the coming weeks.
