Illinois State Police are educating the public about road rage.

On Thursday, a campaign was launched that focuses on reducing road rage incidents in Illinois.  It’s called Road Rage, Don’t Engage.

The effort involves messages on billboards, radio and social media on the dangers of the crime and how to deal with the behavior.

Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelley says although road rage is nothing new, they are seeing people react more aggressively.

He says their simple message is that if you see or become part of a road rage situation don’t engage.

According to a Triple A Foundation for Traffic Safety study, the reasons drivers explained why they became violent were often trivial.

They include incidents where another driver wouldn’t let them pass or they kept tailgating.

Kelley says that extra car length you gain by cutting someone off, or arriving 10 seconds earlier by tailgating another person, is not worth your life.
