This past Monday, January 15th was Martin Luther King Day.  It was also the 95th anniversary of his birth.

VU observed the holiday Wednesday morning at the university rec center  complete with music, a speech and a candlelight walk.

Dean of the VU Office of Global Diversity and Inclusion Heidi Tasa explained why they chose to remember King with what was called a “I Have a Dream Memorial Walk”.

It was all centered around remembering the historic 1963 civil rights march on Washington and King’s famous speech he made at the Lincoln Memorial.

The special speaker at the VU walk was nursing student Demy Jones.

Jones is the President of the Legacy Club at VU which only formed about a month ago.

It’s a study group designated to give students a safe place on campus while connecting with others.

Jones told the audience that King wanted all people to not to have to struggle with finding and expressing their freedom.

She says that dream which he shared over 60 years ago is yet to be totally realized….

Jones says as people try to make history come true, they will need to learn to communicate better without the hate.
