Vincennes Director of Veterans Affairs Martin Qualkenbush has been selected as the 2025 recipient of the city’s Spirit of ’76 Award.

The Fourth of July Committee says Qualkenbush earned the honor for his dedication to local veterans and their families, following a 24-year career with the U.S. Army. He will serve as Grand Marshal of the Independence Day parade and receive the award during a public ceremony at the Harmony Club, 111 N. Second Street, immediately after the parade.

In 2023 alone, Qualkenbush helped secure more than $3 million in benefits for local veterans. He handled over 2,600 calls, completed more than 3,100 actions, and logged nearly 7,500 miles transporting veterans to medical appointments.

In her nomination letter, Becky Bouchie praised his commitment, calling him “a true professional who works for the well-being of those who pledged their lives for the United States.”

Mayor Joe Yochum echoed those sentiments, adding, “Martin deserves this award for his unwavering dedication to our veterans and the community.”
