Perdue Farms has announced it will shut down the second production shift at its Washington, Indiana, turkey-processing facility, a move that will cut 293 positions. The final workday for affected employees is October 10, with pay and benefits continuing through November 2 for those not terminated for cause or who do not resign before that date.

The company said the decision is permanent and cited “changes in consumer demand, decreasing turkey flocks, and how we produce and supply our products” as reasons for the reduction.

In a statement, a Perdue spokesperson said, “A decision like this, affecting our associates, is something we take very seriously. We value the many contributions of our Washington associates, and we are committed to doing all we can to support impacted associates during this transition.”

The Washington plant produces turkey products. Perdue emphasized that its other Indiana operations — including a feed mill, grain receiving facility, hatchery, and breeder farms — will not be affected by the layoffs.
