The defense team for Dylan Allen Smith has filed new motions in the murder case tied to the August 5 shooting death of Taylor Hendershot in Vincennes.
According to Knox Circuit Court records, Smith’s attorneys submitted a request to move the trial outside of Knox County. In a separate motion, the defense gave notice of its intention to pursue an insanity defense.
Smith is accused of shooting Hendershot outside Cardinal Liquors on North Sixth Street before fleeing the scene. He was arrested later that day after a standoff at a nearby home and has been held without bond ever since. Prosecutors have also filed a firearm enhancement, which could add years to any potential sentence.
A final pretrial hearing is set for October 9, with a jury trial scheduled to begin November 4 in Knox Circuit Court, unless the venue request is granted.
