Indiana Governor Mike Braun commented on the government shutdown and redistricting during a visit to Elkhart County on Thursday. Indiana Public Broadcasting reports Braun said efforts to reopen the federal government should also include a conversation about its overall size and spending.
He noted that essential services like Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security continue during the shutdown, but added that suspended programs should be reviewed for possible efficiencies. Braun said the current level of federal borrowing is not sustainable and leaders need to be honest about what they expect from the federal government.
On redistricting, Braun said there’s growing public support for updating Indiana’s congressional maps, pointing out that many other states have already reshaped theirs. He didn’t offer a timeline for when a possible special session of the Indiana Legislature to discuss redistricting might happen, but said state leaders are still working through the process.
