The future of nuclear power is being studied in Pike County.
AES Indiana has announced a nuclear feasibility study at its Petersburg and Eagle Valley Generating Stations in partnership with Advanced Nuclear Advisors. The study will evaluate whether small modular reactors, known as SMRs, could provide reliable and affordable energy in the years ahead.
The announcement follows AES Indiana’s submission of its 2025 Integrated Resource Plan — a 20-year outlook that examines ways to meet the state’s growing energy needs through natural gas, battery storage, and other advanced technologies.
Governor Mike Braun recently toured the Petersburg site to see AES’s ongoing energy transition efforts.
Pike County Commissioners have expressed support for exploring new energy options. Commissioner Mark Flint said the county has the infrastructure, workforce, and available sites to support SMR development, which could bring investment and jobs to the area.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, small modular reactors are advanced nuclear systems designed to produce safe, clean, and flexible power for a variety of uses.
