Keeping the public informed is a key part of the city’s new website at vincennes.org which launched this week. One of the first major items posted is an update on the Washington Avenue Project.

The city says the project is still in design, with construction expected to start in fall 2026. The $5.1 million plan will rebuild the road and sidewalks, upgrade drainage, improve parking, and bring the area up to ADA standards. It also calls for updating the traffic signal at Washington and St. Clair.

Construction will happen in two phases. The first closes the Washington and St. Clair intersection with detours along 13th, Hart, and North 6th. Washington Avenue traffic will use College, North 6th, and State Street. The second phase closes Washington from St. Clair to Emison, shifting traffic to St. Clair, North 6th, and Niblack.

Pedestrian access and entry to homes and businesses will stay open throughout the project.
