A late-night 911 call near Haubstadt turned into an unexpected delivery early Thursday morning.
Just after midnight, Gibson County Dispatch received a report of a woman in labor at the Flying J Truck Stop off I-64 and U.S. 41. Deputy Levi Sims happened to be nearby and reached the family within a minute of fire and ambulance crews being dispatched.
When he arrived, the father flagged him down. Moments later, Deputy Sims delivered a baby girl, handing her to her mother and tying the umbilical cord before first responders took over care.
The family was taken to an Evansville-area hospital and is doing well.
Later this morning, the Sheriff’s Office received a commendation from the mother, thanking Deputy Sims for helping bring their second daughter into the world during what she described as a hectic and exhausting moment.
