Indiana’s state parks are marking New Year’s Day with First Day Hikes, a nationwide effort encouraging people to start the year outdoors.

The hikes take place January first at state parks and lakes across Indiana and in all fifty states. The program is organized by Indiana State Parks in cooperation with America’s State Parks.

First Day Hikes began more than thirty years ago at Blue Hills Reservation in Milton, Massachusetts and were created to encourage year-round use of state parks.

The hikes offer a simple way for people to get outside, be active, and spend time in natural spaces at the start of the new year.

Hikes are happening at Brown County, Harmonie State Park, McCormick’s Creek, Turkey Run, Monroe Lake, Spring Mill, Shakamak and Lincoln State Parks.

A full list of participating parks and hike options is available through Indiana State Parks’ online event listings .
