An Evansville animal shelter is being highlighted on a national television program focused on personal change and recovery.

The Vanderburgh Humane Society is featured in an episode of TLC’s Thousand Pound Sisters, which airs today.

The show follows sisters Amy Slaton and Tammy Slaton of Dixon, who at one point weighed a combined 1,000 pounds. As part of her personal improvement journey, Tammy Slaton volunteered at the Evansville-based animal shelter.

Vanderburgh Humane Society Director of Development Amanda Coburn said staff had to carefully prepare for the multi-day video shoot in spring 2025, including maintaining wardrobe continuity and ensuring enough staff were present during filming.

Coburn said the exposure could help the nonprofit by encouraging volunteer interest, donations, and increased traffic to the organization’s website.

The Slaton sisters also spent time in Vincennes in 2024, where they filmed a separate episode featuring a Main Street business.
