Knox County Commissioners have reappointed Marty Qualkenbush as the county’s Veterans Service Officer through the end of the month.

Qualkenbush is scheduled to retire January 30, and commissioners voted to keep him in the position until that date to avoid a gap in leadership at the Veterans Service Office.

Commissioners thanked him for his dedication and exceptional service.

During the meeting, commissioners cited the need for continuity, noting the office has undergone major improvements during Qualkenbush’s tenure.

Qualkenbush told commissioners the office was not in good shape when he took over four years ago and said he spent nights and weekends completing multiple accreditations to bring it into compliance.

He also urged commissioners to promote from within, pointing to Deputy Director Justin Jones as a qualified successor who can maintain progress and limit retraining costs.
