Jasper has a new mayor following a party caucus held Friday night.

Ryan Craig was selected by precinct committee members to fill the position.

Craig currently serves on the Dubois County Council, representing the county’s second district. He was first elected to that role in 2022.

Craig takes over for Dean Vonderheide who announced is resignation earlier this month.  His decision based on a desire to spend more time with family and reduce work commitments to focus on his health.

He was chosen over Phil Mundy, an at-large member of the Jasper Common Council, who has served on the council for several years after initially being appointed to fill a vacancy.

The caucus was held Friday evening at Jasper City Hall. Thirteen precinct committee members cast votes, with a majority deciding the outcome.

Because Craig’s selection creates a vacancy on the county council, party leaders are expected to schedule a separate caucus to fill that seat in the coming weeks.

Craig will officially take over the Mayor’s Office April 1st.
