A Winter Storm Warning is set to take effect across the region beginning Saturday morning, with timing varying by location. The warning is expected to last through late Sunday afternoon or evening.
Heavy snowfall is forecast with this system. Some weather models indicate snowfall totals could exceed one foot in parts of the warning area which extends over several states. According to a National Weather Service briefing Thursday evening, areas including Vincennes and Washington are expected to receive at least four inches of snow, with up to eight inches possible.
As the storm progresses, travel conditions are expected to deteriorate, with snow-covered roads and reduced visibility making travel increasingly difficult and hazardous. Indiana State Police are advising that any travel plans be cancelled.
In addition to the snowfall, extreme cold is a major concern. A Cold Weather Advisory goes into effect tonight and continues through Friday.
Temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits and teens, with wind chills ranging from two to twelve degrees below zero at times. These conditions significantly increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, particularly when combined with blowing snow and prolonged exposure.
Residents are urged to use caution and take common-sense precautions. Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy snow. Keeping a winter emergency kit in vehicles, including blankets, a flashlight, and a charged phone, is recommended.
When going outdoors dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outside during the coldest conditions. Residents are also encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and others who may be more vulnerable to extreme cold, and to bring pets indoors or ensure animals have adequate shelter, food, and unfrozen water.
Weather conditions may change quickly. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and monitor updates as the storm moves through the region.
