Officials say the scam involves a document made to look like an official court notice. The paper is labeled as coming from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, and references the State of Indiana and the Municipal Court of Marion County.
The notice claims the recipient is accused of a toll violation in Indianapolis, specifically toll evasion and failure to pay a toll. It includes a case number, a listed judge, and a scheduled hearing date.
The document instructs the recipient to either appear in court or resolve the matter by paying a civil penalty and court costs before the hearing. It also includes a QR code that directs users to make a payment.
Law enforcement say these notices are not legitimate and are designed to pressure people into paying money quickly.
Residents are advised not to scan the QR code or send payment, and to contact local authorities if they receive a similar notice.
