National Police Week continues today and Saturday, recognizing the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers across the country. Thursday marked Peace Officers Memorial Day, a time to honor those who have died in the line of duty.

Throughout the week, tributes have poured in on social media. Local law enforcement agencies have also received visits from community groups bringing food and treats as a show of appreciation.

National Police Week is observed during the week of May 15. It was established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, who also designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day.

The observance serves as a reminder of the risks officers take every day to keep communities safe and the ultimate sacrifice made by some in the line of duty.
