Planting progress slowed last week across Indiana. Farmers had just three and a half days suitable for fieldwork. As of Sunday, May 25, 76% of corn and 71% of soybeans were planted—well below the five-year averages of 79% and 69%. That’s according to the USDA.
Emergence was also behind. Just 57% of corn and 49% of soybeans had emerged. That’s four to five points under average. First cuttings of alfalfa and other hay also lag behind normal.
Despite slower progress, crop condition ratings remain strong. Most corn and wheat are rated good to excellent, with only 5% or less rated poor or very poor.
