Construction has officially begun on Bierhaus Flats, a new 240-unit apartment complex in Vincennes. It’s the city’s first market-rate, multi-family housing development in decades.
The groundbreaking ceremony Monday marked a turning point for local leaders who say housing is key to reversing Knox County’s long-term population decline. Officials say the project is a response to a recent study showing the area is short more than 1,000 housing units.
“This project represents the largest residential housing development ever undertaken in Vincennes,” said Steve Blinn with the Vincennes Redevelopment Commission.
Bierhaus Flats is being developed by Simplified Developments, with funding support from the Indiana Finance Authority and infrastructure assistance from the city and the Vincennes Redevelopment Commission.
Supporters say the new housing will help employers retain workers, attract new residents, and boost the local tax base. Construction is expected to move forward quickly following today’s ceremony.
