A Vincennes University student is being credited with providing lifesaving care after a weekend plane crash in Orange County.
Late Saturday night, a small passenger plane went down in a wooded section of the Hoosier National Forest. For hours, rescue crews searched in the dark, using cell phone pings to narrow the area. Just before 4 a.m., responders reached the crash site and found the pilot still alive inside the wreckage.
That’s when the VU student, who had earned search and rescue and EMT certifications through university training, stepped in. He located the plane, provided immediate treatment, and assisted in carrying the pilot out more than a quarter mile to an ambulance.
The news of the student’s effort was shared on social media by the Vincennes University Conservation Law Enforcement Program. The student who is now in the Homeland Security/Public Safety Program at VU was not named in the post.
The student called the effort a team success.
The pilot’s injuries were described as non-life threatening.
