Knox County Prosecutor Dirk Carnahan says his office will continue providing support, resources, and education for survivors of domestic violence and their families.

His comments on social media follow the recent sentencing in a domestic violence case where, despite a history of abuse, Carnahan says the victim testified on the offender’s behalf. He says cases like this show the challenges of prosecuting when survivors resist or remain with their abusers.

He noted seeing yard signs promoting domestic violence awareness displayed at the homes of people who continue to advocate for their abusers, calling it both ironic and troubling.

Carnahan says his office will file charges and prosecute to the extent that the law and evidence allow, working to ensure justice for victims even when they resist those efforts.

He is urging cooperation from victims, stressing that without it, too many cases will end with people being hurt or killed, and children left with lasting consequences.

He encourages anyone who knows someone in an abusive situation to support them and help them find a way out. Sometimes, he says, caring enough means giving that extra push for someone to take a stand.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
