Vincennes University celebrated Veterans Day on Tuesday with its annual ceremony honoring the service and sacrifice of those who have worn the uniform, as well as the families who support them.

A highlight of the event came when Korean War veteran James Earl Wilson received the Ambassador for Peace Medal. The award, presented on behalf of the Republic of South Korea, expresses lasting gratitude for the defense of its freedom. Wilson was recognized for his service aboard the USS Joseph P. Kennedy during operations near Wonsan Harbor in 1951.

This year’s keynote speaker was Retired Major General Richard L. Stevens, a Vincennes native who served more than 35 years in the U.S. Army. Stevens told the audience that Veterans Day is about unity and appreciation, saying, “Now, I’m not going to create any headlines here today by saying that on many issues, our great nation has differing opinions. But Veterans Day is a day to put those differences aside and focus on something that unites us. And that’s gratitude. Gratitude for our veterans.”

The ceremony also featured the presentation of colors by the Vincennes Lincoln High School JROTC, musical performances by the Vincennes University Concert Band and choirs, and a video of Red Skelton delivering his 1969 version of the Pledge of Allegiance from his television show.
