An investigation is underway into an officer-involved shooting in Sullivan early Tuesday morning.

Indiana State Police say Sullivan County Prosecutor Ann Mischler requested detectives to handle the case, which happened around 1:50 a.m. at 615 South Bell Street.

Officers from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department and Sullivan City Police were called to a possible domestic situation. When they arrived, they found a woman in the roadway with visible injuries.

Police say 31-year-old Kylan Holbert then came out of the home and ran toward officers with a knife. Officers ordered him multiple times to drop the weapon, but he continued advancing. One officer fired their weapon, striking Holbert.

Officers immediately provided medical aid. Holbert was first taken to a hospital in Terre Haute, then flown to Indianapolis. His condition has not been released.

The injured woman was also taken to a local hospital but refused treatment.

Indiana State Police detectives are leading the investigation with assistance from local law enforcement and EMS. Once completed, the findings will be turned over to the prosecutor’s office for review.
