Knox County deputies and Indiana State Police arrested a Hazelton man Tuesday evening after a traffic stop on U.S. 50 near Gray Barn Road.

Deputies say the vehicle was speeding and nearly hit two other cars around 5:08 p.m. The driver, 27-year-old Jaret VanPatten, was pulled over and officers say they noticed signs of impairment. His two children — ages four and six — were in the vehicle at the time.

VanPatten was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes for further evaluation, where officers determined he was impaired. He was arrested and taken to the Knox County Jail. State Police say he was also arrested for disorderly conduct while at the hospital. Toxicology results are pending.

The children were released to a relative.

VanPatten faces multiple charges, including operating while intoxicated with passengers under 18, operating while intoxicated, neglect of a dependent, and disorderly conduct.

State Police Trooper Tanner Hurley made the arrest, with assistance from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
