Indiana’s holiday traffic safety enforcement campaign is continuing through the New Year holiday, with local and area law enforcement agencies in Knox County and surrounding counties taking part.
The annual Safe Family Travel campaign is coordinated by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The effort focuses on impaired driving, aggressive driving, and seat belt violations during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Police departments across the region are increasing patrols and conducting sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols. Officers are working overtime to identify impaired drivers and encourage seat belt use.
State officials say alcohol-impaired driving remains a leading cause of deadly crashes during the holidays, and not wearing a seat belt continues to be one of the most preventable factors in traffic fatalities.
Drivers are reminded to plan ahead if alcohol is involved, always wear a seat belt, follow posted speed limits, and avoid distractions behind the wheel. Anyone who sees a suspected impaired or unsafe driver is encouraged to call 911.
