The Vincennes City Council held a public hearing Monday night on a proposed ordinance to vacate a portion of a public alley in Meyer’s Addition to Woodlawn.
The request was submitted by the District of Vincennes of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which owns property at 1604 Main Street. The ordinance calls for closing part of a 10-foot-wide alley that runs northwest between Main Street and Busseron Street, behind several lots between 16th and 17th streets.
According to the petition filed with the city, the ground would be used for construction of a loading dock to serve the organization’s existing facilities. Records also state adjacent property owners have been identified, utility providers have been notified and other sections of the alley would remain open.
The council passed the ordinance on 1st reading on a 6 to 1 vote. The 2nd and 3rd readings will be held at the council’s meeting in two weeks.
In other business, the search for a new executive director of the Pantheon Business and Innovation Theatre is continuing.
Council member Brian Grove, who serves on the Pantheon board, said 35 people have applied for the position so far and applications are still being accepted. He said interviews will begin once the pool is narrowed. The new director will replace Nicole Like, who resigned last year after serving in the role since the center opened in 2019.
The council also heard an update on the Knox County Recycling and Solid Waste Management District. Council member Ed Gornall, who serves on that board, said members will begin the process of finding a new director following the departure of Michelle Smith, who is now president of the Knox County Chamber of Commerce.
