Indiana will conduct a statewide tornado drill Tuesday morning as part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week.

The drill is scheduled for about 10:15 a.m. Eastern time. At that time, the National Weather Service will issue a test tornado warning that will be distributed through several alert systems, including the Emergency Alert System.

Businesses, schools and families are encouraged to treat the alert as an opportunity to practice their tornado safety procedures and review where to go during a warning.

Severe Weather Preparedness Week is coordinated by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security in partnership with the National Weather Service. The effort focuses on helping residents prepare for storms, floods and tornadoes.

Safety officials recommend identifying a shelter location such as a basement or an interior room away from windows. They also advise residents to have more than one way to receive weather alerts, including mobile notifications and a NOAA weather radio.

Drivers are also reminded not to attempt to cross flooded roadways. Officials say motorists should never drive through water covering a road.
