The City of Vincennes says crews are continuing road repairs due to damage caused by winter weather.

Mayor Joe Yochum says the most significant damage typically comes earlier in the season when freezing and thawing impacts pavement. He says crews are working daily to address potholes, and residents can report issues through the city’s mobile app. Yochum says that system helps crews respond quickly to problem areas.

“Moisture gets in the cracks and freezes, and that’s what causes the potholes. But our crews have been out every day, making sure they get ’em. And again, we don’t see every pothole. So if you see one, you can go to the city app and report it. And if it’s reported, usually within 24 hours it’s fixed,” Yochum said.

The app also includes a community calendar and a tool to check railroad crossings when trains are blocking traffic.

Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum says early work is underway on the latest phase of the Washington Avenue project, with utility work expected later this year and full construction planned for next year. He says the city will also move forward with paving after securing state matching funds through a second application process.

“I might have mentioned before, we were denied our Community Crossings dollars, which is our matching — well, legislators put more money in there. And they notified me a couple weeks ago that we could reapply. And it was like, we think there was enough money for everybody, but it’s still first come, first serve. So I’ve got the city engineer John Sprague on it. He’s got everything done. We’ve got the award now, so we will get our paving dollars. It just won’t be spring paving. It’ll probably be more like fall,” Yochum said.

In other updates, the city is also working with a design group to plan upgrades at Gregg Park, with more details expected in the coming months.
