A precautionary boil water advisory remains in effect for Monroe City water customers until further notice.

The Knox County Joint Information Center says the advisory applies to all residents and businesses served by the Monroe City water system following a water main leak.

Officials say water pressure in the system may have been reduced, which could allow contaminants to enter the water supply.

Customers are advised to bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, or washing food.

The advisory will remain in effect until  water quality testing confirms the system is safe.

The Joint Information Center says updates will be provided as they become available.

The break resulted in a disruption of water service on Thursday.  Water was restored around 3:30 p.m.
