More scams are being reported in the Vincennes area, and local law enforcement is warning residents to stay alert.
The Vincennes Police Department says officers took a report Tuesday of a phone scam involving a caller falsely claiming to be a detective. The caller told the victim they had been flagged by Homeland Security and attempted to obtain personal information.
Police say legitimate law enforcement agencies will not call to request money or sensitive information.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is also reporting similar scams. In one case, a victim received a call that appeared to come from a local bank. The caller claimed the victim’s card was being hacked and asked for account details. A code was then sent to the victim’s phone. When the victim shared that code, the caller gained access to the account and withdrew money.
Another reported scam involves callers claiming to work for Knox County and asking to update personal information.
Officials say banks and government agencies will not ask for personal or financial information over the phone. They advise residents to hang up on suspicious calls and contact the agency directly using a verified phone number.
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or victimized is asked to contact local law enforcement.
