Vincennes University awarded more than 2,400 degrees and certificates during its Spring 2026 commencement ceremonies on Saturday.

Graduates represented the Vincennes Campus, VU Jasper, programs in Indianapolis, and distance and military education sites. The Class of 2026 included students from seven countries, 23 states, and 82 of Indiana’s 92 counties.

The day began with the Honors Convocation at the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center, followed by the main Vincennes Campus ceremony at the Physical Education Complex.

During the ceremony, the university awarded an honorary Doctorate of Education to Center for Leadership Development President Dennis Bland. Student speaker Sam Harshbarger of Evansville also addressed graduates before receiving his associate of science degree in Multimedia Communications.

In his remarks, University President Dr. Chuck Johnson encouraged graduates to carry forward the university’s mission and focus on serving others. He told the class that even as technology connects people globally, individuals should be intentional about building meaningful, human connections and supporting others in their communities.

Harshbarger reflected on his own path to graduation, telling the audience his plans changed after high school when he chose to continue his education instead of immediately entering the workforce. He said that decision led to personal growth and new opportunities.

“Choosing VU was an easy decision,” Harshbarger said. “It was close to home, but far away enough for me to spread my wings. And really, that’s what VU does. It pushes you beyond your comfort zone—not to break you, but to expand you, to show you what you’re truly capable of becoming.”

Harshbarger also spoke about the role of campus involvement and friendships in shaping his experience, noting that stepping outside his comfort zone helped build confidence and connections.

Both speakers encouraged graduates to move forward with purpose, use the skills they have developed, and remain open to new opportunities as they begin the next phase after graduation.
